Humans have been using, and communicating through, technology for thousands of years; from cave paintings and stone tools 30,000 years ago to a plethora of digital technologies today. But as digital technology has becoming increasingly integrated into our lives there have been fears and concerns about what its negative impact on humanity.
So what are the social implications of the technology we are creating? Tea Uglow’s team at Google Creative Labs are looking at the intersection between culture and emerging technologies. Among other questions they are looking at how these technologies can augment – rather than change – the human experience; from books that can’t be printed to a cube that allows people to create interactive films.
Although some technology can still detract from experiences or marginalise people, these innovative uses show how it can open up different perspectives. Tea’s team are creating things which prod and push the possibilities of digital technologies, and in doing so start conversations about their social impact.
