Mirror Ritual in opening show MENTAL at Melbourne's new Science Gallery

Mirror Ritual is a project by SensiLab practice-based PhD candidate Nina Rajic, that appropriates an everyday object – a mirror – augmenting it with artificial intelligence (AI) to foster both literal and metaphoric reflection. Through AI generated poetry, the mirror ‘speaks’ to the viewer, each poem tailored to their machine-perceived emotional state.

From Thursda 22 July, Mirror Ritual will be on display in Melbourne at the new home of the Science Gallery as part of the gallery’s opening show MENTAL.

MENTAL features over 20 experimental projects from local and international artists and research collaborators that reflect a range of different perspectives on mental health and ways of being. Part exhibition, part experiment, MENTAL is a place to explore, empathise and question what it means to be human using science, technology and creativity.

Artist Nina Rajic explains some of the concepts behind Mirror Ritual

Exploring the co-construction of emotion by humans and machines Mirror Ritual provokes you to reflect on your internal emotional state, drawing attention to its intentional or unintentional expression, highlighting the harmony or the conflict between the two. Rather than prescribing your emotional state, the work allows you to freely reflect on how you’re feeling, entering into an interpretative dialogue between human and machine.

From Thursday 22 July 2021, you can head inside Science Gallery and reflect on Miror Ritual. Tickets are free and available now. Bookings essential. Book your free ticket at the Science Gallery website.
